Unlock Southeast’s Economic Potential to Boost National Growth, Hon Emeka Obioma Tells FG

Umuahia, Abia State –
Hon. Emeka Obioma, the representative for Umuahia South and Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly, has underscored the economic potential of the Southeast region, emphasizing the Southeast's ability to significantly contribute to Nigeria's national economic growth.

Speaking, Obioma highlighted the strategic importance of the Southeast in the nation’s economic roadmap, citing its wealth in human capital, agricultural resources, and burgeoning industries.
He urged both federal and state governments to prioritize infrastructural development in the s'east, particularly in areas such as transportation, energy, and digital technology, which he believes are critical enablers for the Southeast’s economic transformation.

The Southeast is brimming with untapped resources, both natural and human, that can propel Nigeria’s economy to greater heights. Our people are industrious, innovative, and resourceful. If the right investments are made, particularly in improving our infrastructure and business environment, the s/east can become a significant economic powerhouse,” Obioma stated.

The Chief Whip called for increased collaboration between the private sector and government, suggesting that targeted investments in manufacturing, technology, and agro-industrial sectors could unlock new avenues for growth. He also emphasized the need for policies that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation, particularly among the youth.

By empowering our young people and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), we can create a thriving economic ecosystem that drives job creation and contributes to national development,” Obioma added.

The Abia Lawmaker's remarks resonates with local leaders and business stakeholders, who have also echoed his sentiments.
Many have called on the federal government to pay closer attention to the unique needs of the Southeast region, particularly in terms of infrastructure and economic policies.

As discussions about regional development continue to gain momentum across Nigeria, Obioma’s comments is a significant push for more concerted efforts to harness the Southeast’s potential as a driver of national economic growth.
The region, historically known for its entrepreneurial spirit and resourcefulness, stands poised to contribute more to Nigeria’s overall economic development if the necessary support structures are put in place.

Experts have long noted that the Southeast, with its large population and thriving SME sector, could play a pivotal role in diversifying Nigeria’s economy away from oil dependence.
The region's industrial hubs, like Aba in Abia State, have been centers of local manufacturing, producing goods such as textiles, footwear, and machinery. With improved infrastructure, these industries could expand their reach to both local and international markets.

Obioma’s call to action comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with economic challenges, including inflation, unemployment, and declining oil revenues. Many believe that unlocking the potential of regions like the Southeast could be key to stabilizing and growing the nation’s economy.

As the Southeast continues to position itself as a key player in Nigeria’s economic future, the calls for investment, infrastructure development, and policy reform are likely to intensify.
Hon. Emeka Obioma’s advocacy for the region could signal the beginning of renewed attention on the Southeast as a critical driver of the country’s long-term economic growth.
