Hon. Akaliro Calls for Mental Health Reforms, Applauds Professionals, Caregivers on World Mental Health Day

October 10, 2024 -
The Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro has commended caregivers and mental health professionals for their dedication and service in supporting individuals facing mental health challenges.

In a statement aimed at raising awareness about mental health issues, Akaliro emphasized the crucial role that caregivers and healthcare providers play in ensuring the well-being of those struggling with mental illnesses.

The Lawmaker highlighted the importance of recognizing and valuing the efforts of those who care for the mentally challenged.
He expressed his deep appreciation for the tireless work of mental health professionals, including therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors, as well as the family members and volunteers who provide essential support.

"As we observe World Mental Health Day, we must not only acknowledge the importance of mental health but also appreciate those who work behind the scenes to ensure that those who are struggling receive the help they need. Caregivers and mental health professionals are the unsung heroes in this battle, and we owe them our gratitude," Akaliro said.

The Umuahia North Rep also called for greater investment in mental health services, particularly for the underserved and mentally challenged populations.
He canvassed for more government support and the implementation of robust mental health policies that will ensure that individuals with mental health disorders receive the appropriate care and support.
Akaliro urged the public to end the stigma associated with mental health conditions, emphasizing that mental illness should be treated with the same seriousness and compassion as physical health issues.

"Stigma and discrimination remain some of the biggest barriers to accessing care for the mentally challenged. It is time for society to change its perspective and create an environment where everyone feels safe seeking help.
We need more inclusive policies and facilities dedicated to caring for the mentally challenged," he added.

World Mental Health Day, celebrated annually on October 10, aims to raise awareness about mental health issues globally and mobilize efforts in support of mental health. This year’s WMHD underscores the need for equitable access to mental health care for all.
