Abia State – November 3, 2024
The Abia State House of Assembly Chief Whip and Umuahia South Rep, Hon. Emeka Jacob Obioma, has expressed his heartfelt sympathy for the owners and staff of three Aba-based radio stations that suffered severe fire damage late Saturday evening.
The fire, which broke out in the PZ area off Margaret Avenue along the Aba-Owerri Road in Aba North Local Government Area, caused widespread destruction, reducing costly broadcasting equipment, vehicles, and buildings to ashes.
The affected stations—Enyimba 94.3 FM, Rose 101.9 FM, and Legend 98.3 FM—were reportedly hit hard by the blaze, resulting in millions of naira worth of losses.
In a statement released on Sunday, Hon. Obioma described the incident as “unfortunate” and extended his condolences to those impacted.
"My heart goes out to those affected by the fire," Obioma said.
"We stand with you in this difficult time. It is unfortunate that property worth millions of naira was destroyed, but we take solace in the fact that no lives were lost."
The Chief Whip also urged the Abia State Government to launch a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the blaze.
He expressed his hopes that a full probe might prevent similar incidents in the future, thereby safeguarding the region's media infrastructure.
The loss of essential broadcasting equipment is expected to affect the Radio stations' programming until repairs and replacements can be secured.
Local residents and colleagues from other radio stations have shown an outpouring of support for the affected stations.
The Abia State governor, Dr Alex Chioma Otti has shown his sympathy and concern by visiting the scene of the incident and also pledged his support to the Radio stations affected.
