The Igbo World Union (IWU), a prominent socio-cultural organization, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a platform to address the plight of over 1.3 million Nigerians reportedly imprisoned across 28 states in India.
In a statement released by its President-General, His Imperial Majesty Amb. Sir Dr. Mishak Nnanta, Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum, the IWU described Modi’s historic visit as a unique opportunity to foster stronger ties between Nigeria and India, particularly in the areas of technology, infrastructure, and economic collaboration. However, the organization emphasized the urgency of resolving issues concerning the welfare of Nigerians in India.
Amb. Mishak Nnanta urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to place the reported incarceration of Nigerian nationals at the forefront of discussions with the Indian leader, citing the importance of ensuring justice and fair treatment for Nigerians abroad. He also appealed to both nations to explore mechanisms for bilateral cooperation that would prevent such situations in the future.
“The visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi presents an extraordinary chance for Nigeria to not only deepen diplomatic and economic relations but also address pressing humanitarian concerns. The plight of our citizens in India cannot be overlooked,” the statement read.
The IWU also highlighted the broader significance of the visit, describing it as a milestone for the African continent. India, as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, has maintained strong ties with Africa, and this visit symbolizes a commitment to advancing partnerships in various sectors.
While details of the agenda for the talks remain undisclosed, the IWU has called for a collaborative approach to resolving any diplomatic challenges. The organization further pledged its support for any efforts by President Tinubu aimed at protecting Nigerians abroad and improving their global standing.
As the visit unfolds, all eyes will be on Abuja to see if the plight of Nigerians in India becomes a focal point in the discussions and if concrete steps will be taken to address the reported injustices.
