Umuahia, Abia State —
Following the tragic attack on military personnel in Umuahia, Hon. Emeka Obioma, the Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and representative of Umuahia South, has called for calm and peace.
The attack, which occurred last Wednesday at a military checkpoint in the Umuopara area of Umuahia, claimed the lives of two soldiers following an intense gun battle.
The assailants, who launched the surprise attack, fled the scene after abandoning two vehicles.
The Nigerian military has since intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators.
During a press briefing on Sunday, Hon. Obioma expressed his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and the Nigerian Army. He praised the military's professionalism and urged the public to cooperate with security agencies to prevent further violence.
“While I most sincerely sympatize with the military hierarchy over the loss of its personnel in that attack, I urge all those behind it to embrace peace and dialogue since violence produces nothing but chaos, anarchy, and doom.
A peaceful society will enable progress and prosperity for all,” Obioma stated.
The Chief Whip’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in the area, as security forces continue operations to restore order and ensure the safety of residents.
Obioma called for unity and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities.
This incident marks a grim reminder of the persistent security challenges in different parts of the country.
However, Hon. Obioma expressed confidence in the military’s ability to address the situation and restore peace to the area.
Residents are hopeful for a swift resolution and a return to normalcy.
