As Nigeria approaches a pivotal year, Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Orji, the immediate past Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, has called on legislators across the country to realign their focus with the expectations and aspirations of the Nigerian people. In a press statement, Orji emphasized the critical role lawmakers must play in addressing pressing national challenges and fostering inclusive development.
He highlighted that Nigerians expect a renewed sense of purpose and accountability from their representatives, especially in the wake of growing economic, security, and infrastructural concerns. "2025 must be a year of decisive action, where legislators rise above partisanship and place national interest at the forefront," Orji stated.
The former Speaker outlined key areas where Nigerians expect immediate legislative attention:
1. Security and Stability: Orji urged lawmakers to work collaboratively with the executive arm to tackle insecurity. "The safety of lives and property remains non-negotiable. Legislators must ensure adequate funding, oversight, and the enactment of laws that strengthen our security architecture."
2. Economic Recovery: He called for policies that prioritize job creation, poverty alleviation, and support for small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs). "The legislature must champion bills that stimulate economic growth and provide relief to millions of struggling Nigerians."
3. Education and Youth Empowerment: Orji underscored the importance of reforming the educational system and investing in youth development. "Our young people are our future. Legislators must push for programs that equip them with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in a competitive world."
4. Infrastructure Development: The former Speaker stressed the need for equitable distribution of infrastructure projects across the country. "Every Nigerian deserves access to basic amenities. Legislators must ensure that no region is left behind."
5. Strengthening Democratic Institutions: Orji urged lawmakers to defend the independence of the legislature and uphold democratic principles. "The legislature must remain the voice of the people, ensuring checks and balances and safeguarding our democracy."
Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji further called on legislators to prioritize engagement with their constituents. "The voice of the people is the foundation of democracy. Lawmakers must establish stronger connections with those they represent, understanding their needs and advocating for their welfare."
Concluding his address, Orji expressed optimism about Nigeria's future, stating that with commitment and unity, the country can overcome its challenges and achieve greatness. "The expectations of Nigerians in 2025 are clear: good governance, accountability, and impactful representation. It is the duty of legislators to deliver on these expectations as Nigerians look to their leaders to navigate the nation through its challenges and unlock its full potential.
