Umuahia, Abia State –
Hon Anderson Akaliro Esq., the member representing Umuahia North Constituency in Abia State House of Assembly, has called on event organizers to prioritize safety measures to prevent avoidable tragedies such as stampedes at crowded gatherings.
His statement comes in the wake of recent incidents that have raised concerns over public safety during events.
Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Akaliro emphasized the importance of implementing strict safety protocols to ensure the well-being of attendees.
"The safety of our people must never be compromised," he stated.
"We have witnessed unfortunate incidents where a lack of proper crowd control measures has resulted in injuries and even loss of lives. This is unacceptable, and we must act decisively to prevent such occurrences."
The lawmaker urged organizers to adhere to standard safety practices, including adequate crowd control measures, proper venue inspections, and the provision of emergency response teams.
"It is the duty of every event organizer to ensure that their venues are safe, that there is proper ventilation, and that exits are clearly marked and accessible.
Emergency personnel must also be on standby to respond swiftly in case of any unforeseen situation," Akaliro said.
He further called on relevant authorities to enforce regulations governing public events and impose sanctions on those who fail to comply.
"The authorities must ensure that all event organizers secure the necessary permits, which should include a thorough safety assessment of the venue. Non-compliance must attract serious penalties to serve as a deterrent," he added.
Akaliro also extended his sympathies to victims of recent stampedes, pledging his commitment to improving safety standards in the constituency.
"My heart goes out to the families who have suffered due to these tragic incidents.
May they find strength and solace in this difficult time.
As we mourn, let us also take action to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future," he said.
In closing, the Umuahia North representative encouraged citizens to be vigilant and report any signs of overcrowding or unsafe conditions at events.
"Safety is a collective responsibility. Let us all play our part in ensuring that public events are both enjoyable and secure," Akaliro concluded.
The call for action comes amid festivities, a period often characterized by increased public gatherings. Hon. Akaliro’s message is a timely reminder of the need for precautionary measures to protect lives and prevent future tragedies.
