Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Orji has called on Abians to remain vigilant and adopt safety measures to prevent fire outbreaks during the harmattan season, a period characterized by dry weather and heightened fire risks.
In a statement to Newsmen on Sunday addressing the challenges posed by the harmattan, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji stressed the need for communities to desist from harmful practices such as bush burning, improper disposal of flammable materials, and other fire-triggering activities.
"The harmattan season increases the risk of fire disasters due to dry winds and highly combustible surroundings. I strongly advise everyone to prioritize safety and take precautions to protect lives and property," he said.
He urged residents to stop bush burning, avoid careless handling of matches or cigarette stubs, and ensure that farmlands and surroundings are properly managed to prevent fire spread. He further highlighted the need to keep fire extinguishers handy, create firebreaks, and educate children and family members about fire safety practices.
Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Orji also appealed to community leaders, stakeholders, and security agencies to play an active role in sensitizing people on fire prevention strategies.
"Fire outbreaks can be devastating, but with collective effort and vigilance, we can mitigate these risks. I encourage everyone to work together to ensure the safety of our homes, farms, and businesses," Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Orji stated.
He concluded by urging residents to promptly report any fire emergencies to relevant authorities, emphasizing the importance of swift action in preventing widespread damage. "Let us remain alert, support one another, and ensure this harmattan season passes without tragic incidents," he added.
