Stay Safe, Avoid Bush Burning and Fire Outbreaks this period; Hon. Emeka Obioma Urges Constituents

December 16, 2024 –

Hon. Emeka Obioma, the representative of Umuahia South Constituency in Abia House of Assembly, has called on his constituents to exercise caution during the festive season and harmattan period to prevent fire outbreaks and environmental hazards.

In a statement released today, Hon. Obioma expressed concern over the increasing incidents of bush burning and accidental fires during the harmattan season, a period known for its dry and windy conditions.
He emphasized the importance of safety, particularly as families and communities prepare for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

This season comes with its unique risks, and I urge everyone to stay vigilant. Avoid bush burning, dispose of waste responsibly, and take precautions to prevent fire outbreaks. The safety of lives and property is our collective responsibility,” Hon. Obioma said.

The harmattan season, characterized by low humidity and dry winds, often increases the likelihood of fires spreading rapidly, leading to significant damage to farmlands, homes, and the environment.
Hon. Obioma also highlighted the potential health risks posed by bush burning, including respiratory issues from smoke inhalation.

He encouraged residents to report illegal bush burning activities to local authorities and to adopt fire safety measures, such as ensuring proper handling of flammable materials and maintaining clear firebreaks around their properties.

As part of his outreach efforts, Hon. Obioma announced plans to collaborate with local leaders, community groups, and safety agencies to raise awareness about fire prevention and response strategies.

Let us work together to ensure a safe and joyous yuletide season for everyone,” he concluded.

The lawmaker’s message resonates with calls from environmental and safety experts, who continue to stress the need for vigilance during the harmattan period to protect lives, property, and the ecosystem.
