APC, Obidients Clash Over Alleged Threat to Peter Obi’s Life, Obi Reacts

January 7, 2025 -

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have traded barbs following claims of a threat to Obi’s life.

The dispute stems from remarks made by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka during an interview on Arise Television, where he accused Obi of inciting Nigerians against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Morka alleged that Obi’s criticisms were baseless and inflammatory, suggesting that the former Anambra State governor was acting out of frustration over his election loss. In a controversial statement, Morka said Obi "has coming to him whatever he gets," which many interpreted as a veiled threat.

Peter Obi is shooting recklessly,” Morka said.
He’s irrational and desperate, trying to incite Nigerians instead of reflecting on why he lost the election. He has crossed the line, and he will face the consequences.”

Reacting to the comments, Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, warned the APC against threatening Obi or his associates.
Tanko described Morka’s remarks as dangerous and called for an investigation by security agencies.

That statement is a clear threat,” Tanko said.
If they attempt to intimidate or arrest Obi, it will backfire on their government.
Nigerians will resist any effort to suppress voices that speak out against bad governance.”

Tanko urged security agencies to hold Morka accountable for his statements, adding that the Obidient Movement would not be silenced.
We stand firmly with Peter Obi and his vision for a just and equitable Nigeria.
The APC must learn to tolerate criticism and stop intimidating citizens.”

Obi also addressed the controversy, expressing disbelief that his New Year message could provoke such a response.
Writing on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, he said, “Have I crossed the line? My New Year message has now led to threats against my life, family, and associates.
If I’ve truly crossed the line, let someone point it out. I will not be silenced in my resolve to speak the truth.”

Obi warned of increasing authoritarianism in Nigeria, saying, “We are drifting toward a repressive regime where freedom of expression is under attack. May God help us build a freer and better society.”

In defense of the APC, its National Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, dismissed the allegations of a threat.
He accused Obi’s supporters of misinterpreting Morka’s remarks and escalating tensions unnecessarily.

They’re blowing this out of proportion,” Ibrahim said. “Morka did not issue a threat or insult anyone.
The Obidients need to tone down their rhetoric and embrace politics of maturity.
Opposition is about constructive criticism, not insults and threats.

When contacted, Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi said he was unaware of any reported threats against Obi or Morka.
I’m not aware of what you’re saying. Has this been reported to us?” he asked.
