"Ensure Contractor Returns to Abandoned Umunwanwa/Obizi Link Road Immediately", Hon Emeka Obioma Urges FG

Umuahia, Abia State - February 25, 2025

The Abia State House of Assembly Chief Whip and
member representing Umuahia South Constituency, Hon. Emeka Obioma, has called on the Federal Govt to direct the contractor handling the Umunwanwa/Obizi 20km link road to return to the site and complete the long-overdue project.

Hon. Obioma’s intervention follows growing concerns from residents of Umunwanwa in Abia State and Obizi in Imo State over the prolonged delay in the road’s reconstruction.
The project, initially awarded to enhance transportation and boost economic activities, has stalled, leaving the road in a deplorable condition and disrupting daily movement and commerce.

Expressing disappointment over the slow progress, Hon. Obioma stated that the contractor’s inaction defeats the purpose of the road, which serves as a crucial link between Abia and Imo states.
He stressed that the road has been in a state of disrepair for decades, and the continued delay is unacceptable.

The people of Umunwanwa and Obizi have endured enough hardship due to this road’s terrible condition,” Obioma said. “The Federal Govt must act now to ensure the contractor returns to the site and fulfills their obligation to complete the project.”

A major point of concern is the Umunwanwa Bridge, a critical component of the road that has remained impassable since it was damaged during the Nigerian Civil War over 55 years ago.
Despite its historical and economic significance, it has yet to be fully restored, further compounding the transportation challenges faced by residents.

The Lawmaker assured the people of Umunwanwa of his commitment to pushing for the project’s completion. He called on the relevant federal agencies to prioritize the road’s reconstruction and ensure that it serves its intended purpose of easing movement and fostering economic growth.

His intervention has rekindled hope among constituents, who have long suffered the consequences of the road’s poor condition. Community leaders and stakeholders have also joined the call for urgent action, emphasizing the need for immediate government intervention to complete the vital infrastructure.

As pressure mounts, attention now turns to the Federal Government and the contractor to take immediate decisive action and finally deliver the much-needed road project to the people of Umunwanwa and Obizi.
