Reps Move to Convert Michael Okpara University into Conventional Versity

The legislation to transform Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), into a traditional university underwent its second reading yesterday, signifying an important advancement in the institution's conversion.

The legislation, introduced by Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, comprises 31 sections divided into four parts and a schedule aimed at expanding MOUAU's focus beyond just agricultural sciences.

In a social media post on Friday, Hon. Kalu highlighted the significance of broadening the university's curriculum to feature programs in Arts, Medicine, Law, Social Sciences, and Humanities. "MOUAU has already played a crucial role in Nigeria's agricultural growth, but through this transformation, it will be able to provide a broader array of academic fields." "This growth will not only aid Abia State but will significantly influence the country’s educational system,” Kalu stated.

The suggested change is anticipated to draw a bigger and more varied student body, promoting a more inclusive educational atmosphere and bolstering the university’s standing.

The new initiatives would offer students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds the chance to seek higher education at the institution, which has historically been a center for agricultural science.

The Deputy Speaker voiced assurance that, with the backing of his peers, the bill would obtain the required legislative endorsement. He emphasized that the suggested modifications would act as a catalyst for educational progress in Nigeria, aligning with the nation’s larger objectives for growth and development.

Should the bill become law, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture will experience a remarkable transformation, shifting from a focused institution to a full-fledged university equipped to provide a variety of programs that address the varied demands of 21st-century.
