In Commemoration of World Radio Day, the Member representing Umuahia North in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has emphasized the crucial role of radio in strengthening democracy and fostering national development.
Speaking to National Sunrise correspondent on Thursday, February 13, Akaliro described radio as the “heartbeat of communication”, particularly in rural communities where access to digital media remains limited.
He highlighted how radio serves as a bridge between the government and the people, ensuring that policies, programs, and initiatives reach the grassroots.
"Radio remains the most accessible and trusted medium of communication, especially in a democracy where transparency and accountability are key.
It provides citizens with timely information, enhances public discourse, and gives voice to the voiceless," Hon. Akaliro stated.
The lawmaker also stressed the importance of using radio for civic education, urging broadcasters to continue promoting accurate and unbiased information.
He called on government agencies and private investors to support local radio stations in expanding their reach and improving content quality.
He further acknowledged the challenges faced by the radio industry, including funding constraints, government regulations, and the rise of digital alternatives.
However, he maintained that radio’s adaptability and deep connection with local audiences ensure its continued relevance in Nigeria’s media landscape.
"As we celebrate World Radio Day, I encourage all stakeholders—journalists, policymakers, and community leaders—to harness the power of radio for national development.
We must continue to protect press freedom and encourage content that educates, informs, and unites our people," he concluded.
World Radio Day, observed annually on February 13, was proclaimed by UNESCO to recognize the importance of radio in shaping societies and promoting democratic values.
