As the world marks World Radio Day, the Umuahia South Rep and Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Obioma, has called on journalists and broadcasters to use radio as a tool for promoting peace, unity, and good governance in Nigeria.
Speaking, Hon. Obioma emphasized that radio remains one of the most powerful and accessible mediums for reaching the masses, especially in rural areas where other forms of communication are limited.
"Radio has the power to shape opinions, educate the public, and foster national unity. As journalists, you have a responsibility to use this platform to counter misinformation, promote responsible governance, and encourage peaceful coexistence among Nigerians," he said.
The lawmaker highlighted the role of credible journalism in strengthening democracy, urging media professionals to uphold the principles of accuracy, fairness, and objectivity in their reporting. He also stressed the need for radio stations to dedicate more programs to discussions on civic education, conflict resolution, and government accountability.
Hon. Obioma further lauded the state government for supporting the growth of radio broadcasting by creating an enabling environment for media practitioners.
He advocated for policies that would protect press freedom while ensuring that media houses operate ethically and professionally.
World Radio Day, observed annually on February 13, was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 to celebrate the unique power of radio in connecting communities and fostering dialogue worldwide.
