Hon. Anderson Akaliro Highlights Crucial Role of State Govt in Strengthening Local Governance

March 15, 2025

Hon. Barr. Anderson Akaliro, member representing Umuahia North (Ohuhu) State Constituency, has underscored the critical role of state govts in enhancing local governance and fostering grassroots development.

Speaking at a stakeholders' forum in Umuahia, Akaliro emphasized that effective governance at the local level is contingent upon active support and collaboration from state authorities.

He highlighted that local government areas (LGAs), as the closest tier of government to the people, require more autonomy and financial backing to execute developmental projects.

He stressed that state govts play a crucial role in ensuring that local councils receive their constitutionally allocated funds and are empowered to make independent decisions that cater to the needs of their communities.

"The success of our local government system depends on how well state govts support them. From financial allocations to policy implementation, the state govt has a duty to ensure that LGAs function effectively," he stated.

He also pointed out that weak local governance structures often lead to poor service delivery, underdevelopment, and a disconnect between the govt and the people.

According to the lawmaker, without strong state intervention in enforcing accountability and transparency, local govts may struggle with inefficiency and corruption.

Hon. Anderson Akaliro used the platform to call for urgent legislative reforms to strengthen LG administration. He reiterated the need for the full implementation of financial autonomy for LGAs, in line with constitutional provisions, to prevent undue interference from state govts.

"We need a governance framework that allows local govts to function independently while maintaining a collaborative relationship with state govts. The excessive control of LGA funds by some state govts has hindered meaningful development at the grassroots level," he remarked.

The legal luminary also proposed a review of policies that affect revenue allocation and resource management at the local level.

He advocated for enhanced capacity-building programs for local government officials to improve governance standards and service delivery.

Hon. Barr. Anderson Akaliro reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for policies that promote stronger local governance.

He promised to engage with relevant authorities to ensure that local governments receive the necessary support to drive sustainable development.

"A strong local government system is the foundation of national progress.

"We must all work together to ensure that the people at the grassroots level benefit from governance," he concluded.
