Abuja — May 8, 2025
In a renewed call for peace, justice, and national reconciliation, the Igbo World Union (IWU) has made a passionate appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and facilitate the expedited release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, through the ongoing court processes.
The appeal was made by the President-General of the Igbo World Union, His Imperial Majesty Amb. Sir Dr. Mishak Nnanta, KJW, Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum, during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.
Amb. Nnanta emphasized that the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu has not only heightened tension in the South East region but also continues to deepen the distrust between the federal government and the Igbo populace.
The IWU President-General also pleaded with President Tinubu to demonstrate statesmanship and empathy by facilitating Nnamdi Kanu's release.
"We are not here to justify any illegality. What we are pleading for is for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use his power as the President to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu."
"Mr. President, this is an opportunity to write your name in gold. Nigeria needs healing, unity, and a sense of fairness. The continued incarceration of our son, Nnamdi Kanu, even in the face of mounting legal and humanitarian appeals, does not serve the cause of peace," Nnanta declared.
"We are asking for justice that is not delayed or denied," he added.
Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum further noted that the release of Kanu would calm nerves in the South East, reduce agitation, and open the door for meaningful dialogue.
"Peace is never achieved through force but through dialogue and mutual respect. The Igbo World Union stands ready to work with all stakeholders to ensure lasting peace in the region,” he said.
The appeal by IWU comes amid increasing calls from traditional leaders, civil society groups, and lawmakers for a political solution to the Kanu issue, which they argue has become a humanitarian and regional stability concern.
As the nation watches closely, all eyes are now on President Tinubu’s administration to see whether it will act decisively to address one of the most sensitive justice-related issues confronting the Nigerian state.
