Obi Aguocha's Bill for Federal Medical Centre Ikwuano Scales Second Reading

Abuja – June 23, 2025

A bill seeking the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Ikwuano, Abia State, has successfully passed its second reading at the House of Representatives.

The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal Medical Centre, Ikwuano, Abia State”, is being sponsored by Hon. Obi Aguocha, the Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency.

During the plenary session, Hon. Aguocha passionately argued that the proposed medical centre would address the critical healthcare needs of the region and reduce the pressure on existing facilities within the state and neighboring southeastern communities.

According to him, “The establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia North is long overdue. Our people are in dire need of accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare. This facility will not only save lives but also create employment opportunities and enhance medical research and training.”

The lawmaker emphasized the strategic location of Ikwuano as a health access point that would serve both rural and urban communities effectively.

Several lawmakers across party lines supported the bill, acknowledging the importance of equitable distribution of healthcare infrastructure across Nigeria.

Following the debate, the Speaker referred the bill to the House Committee on Health Institutions for further legislative action and report.

The passage of the second reading marks a critical milestone in the legislative journey of the bill. If eventually passed into law and assented to by the President, the new Federal Medical Centre will become a major healthcare hub in Abia State.

Hon. Obi Aguocha has continued to champion people-centered legislation since his election, with particular focus on infrastructure, healthcare, and education in his constituency.
