As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has called on leaders and citizens alike to embrace justice and equity as the foundation for building a stronger and more united nation.
Speaking in commemoration of Nigeria's Independence Day, Hon. Aguocha described Nigeria’s journey since 1960 as a mixture of triumphs and trials, stressing that the next phase of the nation’s development must be anchored on fairness, inclusiveness, and good governance.
According to him, “As Nigeria marks 65 years of independence, I urge us to reflect not only on our past struggles but also on our duty to uphold justice, fairness, and unity today. True independence is not just about celebration, it is about ensuring that every Nigerian enjoys due process, dignity, and equal treatment under the law.
“At 65, Nigeria has come of age, but the truth remains that we cannot move forward if justice and equity are sacrificed. For us to thrive as one indivisible nation, every region, every community, and every citizen must feel a sense of belonging and fairness in the Nigerian project.”
“I have consistently spoken out on issues affecting our people, including the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, not to elevate any individual above the nation, but to remind us that silence in the face of injustice is complicity. Our democracy and freedom must rest on fairness, equity, and respect for all citizens.
“Let us recommit ourselves to building a Nigeria where no one is marginalized and where the promises of our Constitution are truly lived out. May the labors of our heroes past never be in vain”.
The lawmaker noted that many of the challenges facing the country stem from imbalances and perceived marginalization, adding that genuine reconciliation and national healing can only happen when policies reflect fairness and justice.
“We must confront the realities of our diversity with sincerity,” Hon. Aguocha said. “No part of this nation should feel excluded or treated as second-class. Our constitution, governance systems, and national policies must be instruments that promote inclusivity, fairness, and respect for all Nigerians.”
He further urged leaders across board to rise above partisan and ethnic sentiments, and instead focus on building structures that will guarantee opportunities for all citizens regardless of background.
“Leadership at this stage of our history must be defined by selflessness, equity, and a commitment to serve the people above all else. Anything less will shortchange our future generations,” he stated.
While congratulating Nigerians for their resilience and patriotism despite the challenges, Hon. Aguocha expressed optimism that the country can still achieve greatness if the right steps are taken.
“The hope of Nigeria lies in our ability to unite under justice and equity. If we choose fairness over favoritism and sincerity over selfishness, then our nation will surely rise to its rightful place as the giant of Africa,” he said.
He concluded by calling on citizens to remain hopeful and play their part in nation-building.
“Happy Independence Day Nigeria!”
