As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence anniversary, Hon. Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU) has called for a new era of righteous leadership and active citizen participation in governance, stressing that the nation’s growth and stability depend on leaders and citizens working together in sincerity and accountability.
In a goodwill message released to commemorate the October 1 Independence Day, OAU described Nigeria’s 65 years of nationhood as a journey filled with both achievements and challenges. He noted that while there is much to celebrate, there is also a need to confront lingering issues such as poor leadership, corruption, insecurity, and underdevelopment with a renewed sense of purpose.
According to him, “Nigeria has come a long way since 1960, and we cannot deny the resilience and strength of our people. However, we must also be honest with ourselves that the kind of leadership we have practiced in the past has often failed to reflect dedication to Nigeria's growth, integrity, and service to the people. If Nigeria must truly rise to her potential, then we need leaders who fear God, who are transparent, and who place the people above personal gain.”
Akym also emphasized that citizens have a crucial role to play in shaping the nation’s destiny. He explained that building a better Nigeria is not the responsibility of leaders alone, but also of the people who must hold leaders accountable, participate in civic duties, and shun negative practices that weaken the fabric of society.
He stated, “Good governance thrives when citizens actively participate, not only by voting but also by engaging in community development, speaking up against injustice, and living out the values of honesty and hard work. Nigeria can only be great if her citizens are equally committed to doing what is right in their daily lives.”
OAU further urged leaders across all levels of government to embrace transparency, inclusiveness, and justice as guiding principles. He stressed that leadership devoid of dedication and love for the people a the Nation cannot bring about sustainable progress.
“As we celebrate this 65th Independence anniversary, let us remember that our true independence lies not only in political freedom but also in freedom from corruption, greed, and injustice. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and we must unite in purpose to build the country of our dreams,” he added.
The former Abia governorship candidate further encouraged Nigerians not to lose hope despite prevailing difficulties, assuring that with dedicated leadership and active participation of citizens, Nigeria’s future remains bright. He concluded by calling for unity, peace, and a recommitment to nation-building.
