The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed the no-case submission filed by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, in his ongoing terrorism trial.
Ruling on Friday, Justice James Omotosho held that the prosecution had provided sufficient evidence linking Kanu to the charges, stressing that he has a case to answer. The court therefore ordered him to open his defense.
In a related development, the judge also turned down Kanu’s request to be moved from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to the National Hospital, Abuja, for medical examination. Kanu’s legal team had argued that his health condition was deteriorating and required urgent specialist attention.
Rejecting the application, the court instead directed the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to set up an independent investigation committee to assess Kanu’s medical state. The committee, according to the order, must submit its report within eight days.
The DSS had strongly opposed Kanu’s transfer request, insisting that his health needs were being adequately managed while in custody.
The case has now been adjourned to allow Kanu to enter his defense on the charges brought against him by the Federal Government.
