Five escape death in Lagos auto crashes

Lagos auto crash

At least two people sustained serious injuries, while three others were rescued unhurt in separate road crashes caused by reckless driving and brake failure in the Mile 2 and Surulere areas of Lagos State over the weekend.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority disclosed the incidents in a statement issued on Sunday by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the agency, the first crash occurred at Olohunsogo Bus Stop, inward Mile 2, when a Toyota Camry rammed into a stationary Scania truck.

The collision was said to have left the Camry driver and a passenger seriously injured.

Preliminary enquiries revealed that the ghastly incident was precipitated by the Camry driver’s reckless indulgence in excessive speeding, which ultimately resulted in the fatal loss of vehicular control,” the statement read.

LASTMA disclosed that its emergency responders rescued the victims and rushed them to Ademola Hospital, opposite the Ijanikin Police Station, for urgent medical treatment.

While police officers from the Ijanikin Division provided security support, the statement noted that the driver of the stationary truck was taken into custody by LASTMA officials.

Commenting on the incident, the agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to swift rescue operations, efficient traffic management, and public safety.

The LASTMA boss also warned motorists against reckless driving.

“Excessive speeding and mechanical negligence remain wholly avoidable precursors to tragic road disasters,” Bakare-Oki said, urging drivers to obey speed limits and carry out routine vehicle maintenance.

Sunday’s incident comes barely a week after a fatal crash at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki–Epe Expressway claimed six lives, including that of a child, while nine others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
