The South-West Zonal Directorate of the National Emergency Management Agency paid a familiarisation visit to the Oyo State Police Command on Tuesday, September 16, as part of efforts to deepen inter-agency collaboration in disaster management.

In a statement shared on NEMA’s official X on Wednesday, the agency revealed that the delegation, led by NEMA Zonal Director Mr. Akiode Saheed, alongside principal officers from the Directorate and Ibadan Operations Office, was received by Commissioner of Police Mr. Femi Haruna, PSC, and senior officers at the Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.

During the visit, Mr. Saheed conveyed the compliments of NEMA Director General Mrs. Zubaida Umar and the Agency’s staff to the Commissioner, stating, “We are here to update the Command on NEMA’s strategic plans under our current leadership and to reinforce the long-standing institutional collaboration between our agencies.”

He praised the police for their critical role, noting the “age-long symbiotic relationship” between NEMA and the Nigeria Police Force, and added, “We also appeal for the establishment of a Disaster Management Unit within the Police Command, similar to the Disaster Response Unit (DRU) of the Nigerian military.”

Commissioner of Police Haruna welcomed the visit, expressing appreciation and pledging support: “We are grateful for this visit and assure NEMA of the Command’s unwavering commitment to strengthening synergy and collaboration with your Agency.”

According to NEMA’s Day 2 incident report, the agency recovered one body on Saturday, while the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed that six victims had been rescued and four bodies recovered as of Monday.

The visit by NEMA to the Oyo State Police Command, coupled with its frontline role in rescue operations such as the Lagos building collapse, highlights the importance of proactive disaster management and stronger partnerships between security and emergency agencies.

By reinforcing synergy, establishing disaster units, and prioritising preventive measures, Nigeria can build a more resilient emergency response system capable of saving lives and reducing the impact of future crises.
