The Peoples Democratic Party councillorship candidates in Kwara State have vowed to reclaim power in 2027, declaring that the ruling All Progressives Congress has “failed woefully at the grassroots” since the controversial local government election of September 2024.

At a press conference in Ilorin on Thursday, the PDP candidates, supported by their chairmanship counterparts, said that the APC-led government has denied the state of community development, abandoned youths and women, and failed to address insecurity across the state.

Coordinator of the group, Comrade Saka Muftau Aromaradu, said the past year has shown that “those declared winners by KWSIEC in 2024 are unknown in their wards, lack legitimacy, and have been incapable of delivering even the smallest community projects.”

He added that the local government system had been reduced to “a rubber stamp for decisions taken at the state level.”

While pointing to one of the Kwara State LGA chairmen as an example of one of the ways the state government “emasculated leadership with no autonomy,” the group further accused Governor AbdulRazaq of deliberately punishing opposition strongholds by denying them state and federal projects, describing his governance as divisive and vindictive.

“Kwara deserves better. The tragedy of 2024 must not repeat itself. In 2027, we will rally Kwarans to restore genuine democracy, inclusiveness, and grassroots governance,” Aromaradu said.

The PDP also accused the APC government of plunging Kwara into insecurity and poverty, citing the worsening banditry in Kwara North and South, the erosion of local government autonomy, and alleged deliberate exclusion of opposition communities from development projects.

However, the opposition praised former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, for “continuing to champion grassroots development through healthcare, education, and youth empowerment programmes,” despite the party’s exclusion from local government administration.

The group vowed to mobilise Kwarans ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that “the will of the people can not be permanently suppressed.”

It also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure that future polls in the state meet international best practices while also calling on citizens to resist “politics of division and fraud.”
