Abia Teachers Poised for Colourful Celebration of 2025 World Teachers’ Day

Umuahia, October 2, 2025 – All roads will lead to Umuahia on Sunday, October 5, as the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Abia State Wing, joins the rest of the world in celebrating the 2025 edition of World Teachers’ Day.

The grand celebration, themed “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession” with the sub-theme “Together for Teachers, Together for Tomorrow”, promises to be a day of reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment to the teaching profession.

Teachers from across the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia will converge on the NUT New Teachers’ House, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, for a colourful event featuring keynote lectures, professional development sessions, award presentations, and a vibrant march-past.

The spotlight will also shine beyond the state, as 24 selected teachers will represent Abia at the national celebration in Eagles Square, Abuja. On that stage, Abia’s Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, will receive a Golden Award of Excellence for Education and Teacher Friendliness. The honour recognizes his dedication to education, including a landmark decision to allocate 20 percent of the state’s 2025 budget to the sector, as well as the recruitment of over 5,300 new teachers.

Union leaders have described the governor as a true friend of teachers and a champion of education. According to them, his reforms have rekindled hope in the sector and repositioned Abia as a centre of learning and innovation.

The Umuahia event will be hosted by Comrade Madu Friday Chukwujekwu, Chairman of NUT Abia State. The Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, will serve as Chairman of the Occasion, while Governor Otti himself is billed to attend as the Special Guest of Honour.

Issuing the statement on behalf of the union, Comrade Mrs. Nnenna Okonkwo, Principal Assistant Secretary General, noted that the day is both a celebration and a call to action. She stressed that, “the working condition of the teacher is the learning condition of the child.”

With expectations high and preparations in top gear, the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Abia promises to be both historic and inspiring, a moment where teachers will be honoured as the true builders of tomorrow.
