Corpse of woman swept away by flood found in Anambra river

Anambra flood

The corpse of the woman swept away during a downpour at the Nnewichi community, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Tuesday, has been found in a river,

Our correspondent gathered that the woman (name withheld) was attempting to step out of the gate of her residence on a motorcycle when the tide of the heavy flooding swept her together with the motorcycle and dragged them away.

A resident in the area, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday, said the incident happened at about 9:45 am after the victim came out from the gate with her motorcycle, about to go to her place of business.

The eyewitness said that after the rain subsided, a search team was formed by neighbours, family members, and relatives, where her lifeless body was later found in a flowing river in a neighbouring community.

The source said, “The woman was attempting to go out with her motorcycle while it was still raining, but as she stepped out of their gate and was about to mount the motorcycle, the tide of the raging flood on the road swept her away, together with the motorcycle.

“It was a horrific moment as she was shouting while the flood was carrying her. From what we gathered, she was going to her place of business when the incident happened.

“The rain wreaked havoc in so many places yesterday (Tuesday), it was after it subsided that a search party was formed, comprising neighbours, family members, and relatives. After a long search, her lifeless body was found in a flowing river in a neighbouring community.”

A video circulating on social media also showed the lifeless body of the deceased floating on the river while members of the search and rescue team were making efforts to evacuate it.

In a related development, danger was said to have been averted on Tuesday, when four passengers escaped death when the heavy flood swept away the tricycle they were riding on at the Obodoukwu Junction, in Okpoko, Ogbaru LGA of the state.

It was gathered that the occupants of the tricycle jumped out when the tide of the heavy flood was sweeping the tricycle away.

The tricycle, which was later found under a culvert in a drainage near the river on Wednesday, had already been badly damaged, and its windscreen was shattered.

Also, the video of the incident circulating on social media showed when some residents pulled out the tricycle from the drainage and were examining the extent of the damage on it.

All efforts to get the reactions of the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, and those of the state Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu, on the incident proved abortive, as they were yet to respond to their calls and text messages as of the time of this publication.
