The Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro (Excess Grace), on Thursday, October 30, 2025, joined the people of Umuawa Alaocha community to celebrate their annual Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival and Award Giving Ceremony.
Hon. Akaliro graced the colourful occasion with his presence and active participation, adding prestige and excitement to an event that showcased the rich cultural heritage, unity, and hospitality of the people of Umuawa Alaocha.
The celebration, which drew sons and daughters of the community from far and near, featured traditional dances, cultural displays, and the recognition of distinguished individuals who have made notable contributions to the development of the community.
Speaking, Akaliro commended the traditional leadership, elders, and entire people of Umuawa Alaocha for their commitment to peace, unity, and cultural preservation.
He described culture as a vital tool for community cohesion and identity, urging the younger generation to embrace and sustain the values of their forefathers.
“I am deeply honoured to celebrate with my people of Umuawa Alaocha today,” Hon. Akaliro said. “The Iri Ji festival is not just about the new yam; it is a time of thanksgiving, unity, and reflection on our shared values. It reminds us of the importance of gratitude, hard work, and communal harmony.”
He further expressed appreciation to the community leaders for maintaining peace and fostering progress, noting that cultural festivals such as Iri Ji strengthen social bonds and encourage development.
“Our culture defines who we are. When a people preserve their cultural values, they preserve their identity and strengthen their bond as a community,” he stated. “I salute Ndi Umuawa Alaocha for keeping this legacy alive and for recognising the efforts of those who have contributed to the growth of this great community.”
Reaffirming his commitment to people-centered leadership, the lawmaker assured the community that his representation at the Abia State House of Assembly will continue to reflect transparency, equity, and accountability.
“As your representative, my duty is to ensure that the voice of Umuahia North continues to be heard and respected. I remain fully committed to the welfare and progress of our people through effective legislation and advocacy,” Akaliro emphasized.
