Abia State |October 13, 2025 —
The Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Obioma, has lauded the leadership of the St. Nicholas Anglican Church (City of Praise), Ohiya, for their visionary initiative in embarking on the construction of a N150 million Ultra-Modern Church Hall and Skill Acquisition Centre, tagged “The Redemption Hall.”
Hon. Obioma, who graced the Foundation Stone-Laying Ceremony held at the Cathedral Church of the Good Shepherd, described the project as a monumental step towards merging spiritual development with socio-economic empowerment. The event was officiated by His Lordship, The Rt. Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Obijuru Ibeabuchi, JP, Bishop of Umuahia Anglican Diocese, who led prayers and thanksgiving for the successful commencement of the project.
Speaking during the ceremony, Hon. Obioma commended the Church for thinking beyond worship to embrace a holistic vision that empowers the youth and enhances community well-being.
He noted that the establishment of a skill acquisition centre within the church premises reflects the Church’s commitment to addressing real-life challenges faced by young people today.
“This foundation is not just about bricks and cement; it is about building lives, equipping minds, and preparing our youth for the future,” Hon. Obioma stated.
“In a time when unemployment remains a national challenge, such initiatives by the Church show foresight and compassion for the next generation.”
He emphasized that laying a foundation for skill acquisition represents one of the most sustainable ways to fight poverty and social dependence, stressing that when young people are empowered with skills, they become self-reliant and productive members of society.
“The Church has always been a moral compass, but now it is also becoming a centre for practical transformation. By combining faith with skills, the Church is raising a generation that will not only pray for opportunities but also create them,” he added.
Hon. Obioma further pledged his continuous support for community-driven projects that align with his commitment to education, empowerment, and youth development in Umuahia South and beyond.
He reaffirmed his belief that government and faith-based institutions must work hand in hand to foster development at the grassroots level.
In his address, Bishop Ibeabuchi expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, parishioners, and community members for their presence and support, describing the project as a divine assignment aimed at serving both spiritual and physical needs. The bishop prayed for God’s blessings upon all who contributed to the success of the event.
The ceremony drew clerics, community leaders, government officials, and parishioners who joined in celebrating what many described as a landmark moment for the Ohiya community and a step towards a more empowered and faith-driven society.
