In a renewed push to deepen international collaboration and strengthen governance capacity, Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, the Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, has expressed his commitment to exploring UK partnerships in youth empowerment, education, and community development.

Hon. Obioma, alongside other distinguished members of the Abia State House of Assembly, participated in a working and enlightenment visit to the United Kingdom on October 16, 2025.

The delegation’s visit formed part of ongoing efforts to promote cross-country legislative exchanges and global partnerships aimed at driving development in Abia State.

During their engagement at the British Parliament, the delegation met with Florence Eshalomi, MP, and UK Trade Envoy to Nigeria, who emphasized the importance of deepening Nigeria–UK trade ties and upholding transparency and accountability in governance as vital tools for attracting global investments.

Speaking on the significance of the visit, Hon. Obioma described it as “a timely and transformative opportunity to learn from advanced legislative systems and explore collaborative projects that will directly benefit our people in Abia State.”

He added, “Beyond legislative exchanges, this visit has opened doors for partnerships in youth capacity building, entrepreneurship, and community-based initiatives. The United Kingdom has a strong model of grassroots governance and civic engagement which we intend to adapt and localize in Abia.”

The Abia lawmakers also observed plenary sessions and debates on the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Bill, gaining firsthand experience of how environmental policies are shaped through democratic dialogue and stakeholder consultation.

Hon. Obioma noted that such exposure provides valuable lessons in policy formulation, environmental protection, and institutional accountability.

“We saw how inclusiveness and structured debate drive effective lawmaking. These are practices we will continue to promote in our own legislative processes to ensure that the interests of every Abian are represented,” Obioma said.

The delegation’s visit to the Islington City Council provided another dimension of learning, focusing on local governance models, youth engagement frameworks, and sustainable urban development. Hon. Obioma remarked that the visit was “fruitful, inspiring, and enlightening,” adding that he would personally champion initiatives aimed at connecting Abia’s youth with similar opportunities for mentorship and skill development.

He further commended Gov. Alex Otti for his visionary leadership, describing the Governor as “a leader who is restoring Abia’s credibility and global recognition through transparent governance and people-centered policies.”

Hon. Obioma reaffirmed his belief that the visit to the UK represents a bold step towards adopting global best practices that will strengthen legislative efficiency, improve constituency engagement, and promote sustainable development across Abia State.

“Our goal is simple: to learn, to connect, and to bring home ideas that will transform our communities. Abia’s progress depends on how effectively we can blend global insights with local realities,” Obioma concluded.
