Sunday Wellspring: Serving God Through Service to Humanity — By Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU)

True service to God is not only expressed in prayers, songs, and religious gatherings but in how we treat others. The essence of faith is love in action, and this love is best shown through our willingness to serve humanity. Jesus Christ demonstrated that the greatest in God’s kingdom are those who serve others. In Matthew 23:11, He said, “But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.” This statement reveals that spiritual greatness is not found in titles or positions but in the humble act of service.

Serving humanity is a direct reflection of our relationship with God. When we show kindness, compassion, and care to others, we mirror God’s nature of love. The book of 1 John 4:20 reminds us, “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar.” Our love for God must be proven by our love for people. Helping others in need, forgiving those who wrong us, and working for the good of our communities are all ways we express genuine worship. It is not enough to speak of love; we must live it daily through selfless service.

Jesus Himself modeled what it means to serve humanity. He washed the feet of His disciples, healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ultimately gave His life for the salvation of the world. In John 13:14-15, He said, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.” This teaches us that no one is too high to serve and that leadership in God’s eyes is defined by humility and compassion. Serving others should never be seen as a burden but as a privilege to represent God’s love on earth.

When we serve humanity, we serve God indirectly because every person is made in His image. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus declared, “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” This means that acts of charity, kindness, and empathy toward others are seen by God as acts done unto Him. The poor, the sick, the orphan, and the elderly are opportunities for us to express divine love in practical ways.

Serving humanity also brings personal fulfillment and spiritual growth. It helps us develop virtues like patience, humility, and compassion. Galatians 6:9 encourages us not to grow weary in doing good, for “in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Sometimes our service may not be appreciated by men, but God, who sees in secret, rewards openly. Each act of kindness builds our character and strengthens our faith, making us more like Christ.

Furthermore, serving others builds stronger communities and promotes peace. When people act out of love and empathy, divisions are healed and understanding grows. Philippians 2:4 advises, “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” A society that embraces service to humanity becomes a reflection of God’s kingdom, where everyone cares for one another. Such service transforms not just individuals but entire nations.

In conclusion, serving God through service to humanity is one of the highest forms of worship. It is the foundation of true Christianity and the measure of spiritual maturity. Every believer is called to be a vessel of God’s love, reaching out to others in both word and deed. As we serve with sincere hearts, we fulfill God’s commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves. May we always remember that in serving others, we are serving the Almighty Himself.
