Former Abia State governorship candidate, Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), has condemned the worsening wave of insecurity across Nigeria, describing recent tragedies, including the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba by terrorists, as painful reminders of a nation in urgent need of decisive action.
In a statement issued on Friday, OAU said Nigeria is facing an increasingly dangerous security breakdown that continues to claim innocent lives across regions. He insisted that “the government must do better; our children deserve safety and peace.”
Speaking about the Kebbi school attack, Akym said the assault on children, the most vulnerable members of society, was intolerable.
“My heart is heavy as I receive the heartbreaking news from Kebbi State about the attack on Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School, which led to the abduction of several young female students and the killing of a staff member,” he said.
He described the repeated assaults on schools as “devastating, heartbreaking, and completely unacceptable losses”, stressing that no nation can progress while its children live in fear.
Onyekwere Akym also extended his condolences to the family of Brigadier General Musa Uba, who was reportedly ambushed, captured, and murdered by terrorists despite earlier denials from military authorities.
“The killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba is a national tragedy. A Brigade Commander, ambushed, kidnapped, and gruesomely murdered, yet Nigerians are left with no clear information. If a senior military officer can be taken and killed this way, what then happens to unarmed civilians?” he lamented.
He described the murder of the senior officer as a heavy blow to the nation’s morale and a frightening sign of the emboldenment of criminal elements.
“This is a man who dedicated his life to defending our country. His death must not be in vain. Nigeria owes him justice, and his family deserves answers,” he added.
Turning to the recent violence in Kaduna, where a Catholic priest was abducted and his brother and others were killed, OAU said the attacks were yet another example of the worsening insecurity plaguing communities.
“Our communities are bleeding, families are drowning in sorrow, and fear is becoming widespread,” he said.
Hon Onyekwere Akym Uche extended his deepest sympathies to all families affected by these tragedies, from military families mourning their loved ones to parents in Kebbi praying for their abducted daughters, and to communities in Kaduna grieving innocent lives.
“I condole with every family, every community touched by these senseless acts of violence. Nigeria is hurting, and we must confront this crisis with urgency, unity, and compassion,” he said.
The former governorship candidate called for an immediate overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture and a renewed commitment by government at all levels to protect citizens.
“I call on the Nigerian government to intensify security efforts, strengthen intelligence networks, and act decisively. We cannot continue to react only after tragedy strikes,” he warned.
He also urged the military and security agencies to maintain transparency and rebuild public trust.
“Nigerians deserve clarity, accountability, and honest communication. Denials followed by tragedies only deepen distrust. The safety of citizens must be the highest priority,” he stated.
OAU ended his message with a passionate appeal for collective action and sustained prayers for healing.
“My prayers are for the safe return of the abducted girls, for comfort to the bereaved, and for protection over every Nigerian. Our nation cannot afford to fail its people,” he concluded.
The recent incidents; from the killing of a top military officer to school attacks, community and church assaults have renewed calls for urgent reforms to confront Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation.
