Abia State |December 23, 2025 —
The Abia State Chapter of the OPURUICHE Women Organisation, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to women empowerment and grassroots development, was formally inaugurated over the weekend in a well-attended ceremony that brought together women leaders, community stakeholders, and development advocates from across the state.
The inauguration was held on behalf of the Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Tommy Jacob-Obioma. Although unavoidably absent, the lawmaker was represented by his Personal Assistant, Comrade Chisom Nwaukwa, who conveyed his goodwill and firm support for the vision, programmes, and objectives of the organisation.
In recognition of his selfless service to God and humanity, as well as his consistent advocacy for women empowerment, inclusive governance, and community development, the OPURUICHE Women Organisation conferred on Hon. Emeka Obioma the distinguished title of “The People’s Honourable.” The leadership of the organisation described the honour as a testament to the lawmaker’s people-centred leadership style and enduring commitment to the welfare of his constituents in Umuahia South and Abia State at large.
In a message delivered at the event, Hon. Obioma expressed deep appreciation for the honour, describing it as humbling and motivating. He said the recognition serves as a renewed call to service and greater responsibility.
“I receive this honour with gratitude and humility. It is not merely a title, but a reminder of the trust and expectations of the people, which I remain committed to upholding through sincere and selfless service,” he stated.
The Chief Whip reaffirmed his strong belief in the critical role of women in driving sustainable development, noting that meaningful societal progress cannot be achieved without deliberate investment in women and families.
“When women are empowered economically and socially, communities are strengthened, families are stabilised, and development becomes more inclusive and sustainable,” Obioma said, adding that his support for policies and initiatives that uplift women would remain unwavering.
Hon. Obioma also commended the leadership of the OPURUICHE Women Organisation for its clear vision and commitment to grassroots mobilisation, describing the establishment of the Abia chapter as timely and strategic. According to him, women-led organisations play a vital role in promoting unity, peace, and economic resilience at the community level.
“I commend OPURUICHE for this noble initiative, which aligns with our shared goal of building a more just, equitable, and morally grounded society,” he noted.
Earlier, leaders of the OPURUICHE Women Organisation explained that the NGO was established to promote unity among women, encourage economic empowerment, advocate social justice, and uphold strong moral values. They pledged to collaborate closely with government officials, traditional institutions, and community leaders to implement sustainable programmes that will positively impact women and families across Abia State.
The event featured goodwill messages, prayers, and a formal charge to the newly inaugurated executives to uphold the organisation’s ideals of service, accountability, and community engagement. Participants applauded the initiative and lauded Hon. Emeka Obioma for his consistent support for women-focused initiatives and inclusive governance.
The inauguration of the OPURUICHE Women Organisation in Abia State marks a significant step toward strengthening women-led development efforts, while the conferment of the “The People’s Honourable” title further underscores Hon. Emeka Obioma’s reputation as a grassroots-oriented leader committed to the welfare and progress of his constituents.
