The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has commended Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, Sokoto State Governor, Almad Aliyu Sokoto, and Hon. Obi Aguocha for their recent visit to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Center.
The group described the visit as a rare and significant moment of solidarity for Kanu, whom they regard as a prisoner of conscience.
In a statement released by its spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB applauded the lawmaker and governors for taking the time to see Kanu, noting that the gesture resonated strongly among many in the South East and beyond who have been following his case closely.
“Gov Alex Otti, Gov Almad Aliyu, Hon. Aguocha, and other concerned Igbo leaders have shown that they care about the plight of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Their visit and prayers, represent a rare moment of solidarity, and it is deeply appreciated by those who see Kanu’s case as symbolic of broader issues affecting our people,” Emma Powerful said.
IPOB reiterated its long-standing position that Kanu’s incarceration remains a major grievance in the South East. The group expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding his arrest, rendition from Kenya, extended detention, and recent transfer to Sokoto. IPOB also noted that Kanu has not been convicted of any offense under Nigerian or international law, describing his life sentence as a reflection of systemic injustice.
The group stressed the importance of safeguarding Kanu’s wellbeing while in custody, warning that any harm, whether intentional or accidental, could trigger serious consequences. IPOB emphasized that maintaining his safety is crucial to ensuring calm and preventing unnecessary tensions in the region.
Despite the transfer of Kanu to Sokoto, IPOB affirmed that support for him remains strong among a significant segment of the Igbo population and other Nigerians. The group also reiterated its commitment to non-violent advocacy, calling for a United Nations-supervised referendum as part of its long-term objectives.
The statement concluded by expressing gratitude to Governors Otti and Almad Aliyu, as well as Hon. Obi Aguocha, for their initiative, describing their visit as a gesture that “resonates with many who continue to follow the case with keen interest.”
