Reliable Power Transforms Communities — Aguocha Hails Otti’s Move to Strengthen Electricity in Abia

Umuahia, Abia State |December 6, 2025 —

Hon. Obi Aguocha has commended the Abia State Government for its bold initiative to strengthen electricity supply across the state, describing it as a critical step toward unlocking economic growth and improving social development.

The commendation came during the groundbreaking ceremony for two new 7.5 MVA injection substations in Umuahia, a combined 15 MVA project designed to boost power reliability in the capital city and surrounding communities.

The ceremony, which held on Wednesday, was led by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti and attended by senior government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, PhD.
One of the substations is funded under the federal government’s NIPP initiative by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, while the other is financed by the Abia State Government through the proposed 2026 budget. Gov. Otti set a three-month completion target for the state-funded substation and encouraged NDPHC to accelerate its timeline so both facilities can be commissioned by June 2026.

Speaking during the event, Hon. Obi Aguocha praised the Governor for attracting such strategic investment to Umuahia. He emphasized the importance of reliable electricity for the growth of businesses and communities across Abia State.
Stable electricity is the heartbeat of Abia’s growth,” he said. “No community or business can achieve meaningful progress without dependable power, and this initiative is a major step forward for the state.”

He further noted that the dual substation project would significantly reduce power outages, enhance industrial productivity, and improve the quality of life for residents.
These substations mark a new era for power in Umuahia,” Aguocha added. “It is a project that will unlock the economic potential of our communities and create opportunities for businesses to thrive.”

Gov Otti highlighted that the state had anticipated rising electricity demand and proactively made provisions for its own substation to complement the federal project. He also acknowledged the federal government’s reforms in the electricity sector, which empower states and private sector players to participate in expanding power infrastructure. The Governor disclosed that Abia State has secured arrangements with Heirs Holdings to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to Aba Power Limited, a move expected to further stabilize electricity in the state.
Hon. Aguocha, in his goodwill message, reiterated that reliable power is essential for both social and economic development.

Dr Alex Otti’s strategic investment in these substations demonstrates visionary leadership,” he said.
It is not just about bringing electricity to homes and businesses; it is about laying a foundation for long-term development and prosperity in Abia State.”

The groundbreaking ceremony concluded with stakeholders expressing optimism that the completion of the project would transform electricity supply in Umuahia and its environs, positioning Abia as a leader in infrastructural development and economic growth in the South-East region.
