World Mental Health Day: Engr. Chinedum Orji, Advocates for Legislative Support on Mental Health Initiatives

Abia State, Nigeria – October 10, 2024.
Former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Engr. Chinedum Orji, in commemoration of World Mental Health Day, has called on legislators and policymakers to prioritize mental health issues through comprehensive legislative reforms
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, October 10, 2024 marking World Mental Health Day (WMHD), Orji emphasized the growing importance of mental health in today’s society and the urgent need for a dedicated framework to tackle the rising cases of mental health disorders across Nigeria.

Engr Orji, who has been a vocal advocate for social development and healthcare reforms, stressed the need for legislative backing to ensure the sustainable implementation of mental health initiatives at both state and national levels. He highlighted the stigma associated with mental health issues in Nigeria, which often prevents individuals from seeking the help they need, resulting in a public health crisis.

"There is an alarming rise in mental health disorders, especially among young people and vulnerable groups in our society. We cannot continue to overlook the critical role of legislation in addressing these challenges," Orji stated.
He added that mental health services in Nigeria remain underfunded, with inadequate resources and limited public awareness further exacerbating the situation.

Engr. Chinedum Orji proposed that lawmakers develop and pass bills that would ensure proper funding for mental health services, training for healthcare professionals, and the establishment of support systems within communities. He also called for policies aimed at integrating mental health care into primary healthcare services to make mental health support more accessible to the general public.

His remarks come at a time when mental health awareness is gaining traction in Nigeria, with calls for reforms to address the needs of individuals affected by depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Despite the progress made with the signing of the National Mental Health Act in January 2023, Orji stressed that much work remains to be done at the state level to align with national efforts.

Mental health advocates in Abia State have applauded Orji's initiative, noting that his leadership on this issue could help change attitudes and reduce stigma surrounding mental health conditions in the region.
With strong legislative support, they believe that mental health could become a critical component of the state's healthcare policy, leading to a healthier and more inclusive society.

Orji’s call for legislative reform adds to the growing demand for mental health to be recognized as a national priority, with lawmakers and stakeholders across the country urged to take bold steps to address the mental health crisis and improve the well-being of citizens.
