World Mental Health Day 2024: Hon. Emeka Obioma Highlights Importance of Community Support

October 10, 2024 -
Hon. Emeka Obioma, member representing Umuahia South Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly has underscored the critical role community support plays in promoting mental health
He also emphasized the importance of collective efforts to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues, especially in Africa.

Speaking to newsmen in Umuahia, Obioma expressed concern over the increasing rates of mental health challenges globally, exacerbated by economic uncertainty, and social isolation.
The Lawmaker noted that in many African societies, mental health is often misunderstood, leading to discrimination and inadequate support for those in need.

We must realize that mental health is not just a medical issue but a social one. Our communities must be the first line of support, and this means creating safe spaces where people feel free to seek help without fear of judgment,” Obioma said.

He went on to praise the efforts of local mental health organizations and volunteers who are working tirelessly to raise awareness and provide much-needed services. Obioma, who is the current Abia State House of Assembly Chief Whip also called on the Nigerian government to allocate more resources to mental health services and ensure that policies addressing mental well-being are enforced.

The Umuahia South Rep urged his constituents to engage in community-building activities and emphasized the role of schools, religious institutions, and workplaces in fostering environments conducive to mental well-being.
He cited the need for a national campaign to educate the public on recognizing early signs of mental health issues and how to offer effective support to those affected.

In line with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) call to make mental health care accessible for all, Obioma pledged to support legislation aimed at improving mental health infrastructure and training health care workers to better serve vulnerable populations. He also encouraged partnerships between government agencies, civil society groups, and private organizations to ensure that mental health support is integrated into all levels of society.

As Nigeria joins the global community in commemorating World Mental Health Day, Obioma's message resonates deeply, as many hope that his words will inspire positive action in the ongoing fight for mental health rights and support across the nation.

World Mental Health Day, observed every year on October 10th, is a global effort to raise awareness about mental health issues and mobilize support for mental well-being. This year’s WMHD highlights the importance of collective responsibility in promoting mental health for all.
