I will champion a Bill for Rights of Elders; Abia Assembly Chief Whip, Emeka Obioma declares

Umuahia, October 14, 2024 –
In the face of economic hardship in Nigeria and a strong commitment to the welfare of the elderly population, the Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and member representing Umuahia South Hon. Emeka Obioma, has vowed to spearhead a bill aimed at securing the rights of senior citizens in the state.

Speaking to news men in Umuahia, Obioma emphasized the need for legislative attention to address the unique challenges faced by elders.

Hon. Obioma highlighted the lack of structured support for the elderly, who often face neglect, abuse, and inadequate access to healthcare.
"Our elders are the bedrock of our society; they have contributed immensely to the growth of our communities, and it is time we recognize and protect their rights," Obioma said.

The proposed bill will focus on improving healthcare services for seniors, ensuring social security, and establishing measures to prevent elder abuse.
Obioma assured that the bill, once passed, would pave the way for better care, legal protections, and social services for the elderly in Abia State.

The Chief Whip stressed that the rights and dignity of elders should be a priority for every lawmaker.
"We owe it to our fathers and mothers to create a society where they can age with dignity and respect," he added.

The lawmaker has been praised by his constituents of Umuahia South with community leaders and elders who see it as a positive step towards safeguarding the interests of one of the most vulnerable groups in the society.
