International Day of the Girl Child: Protecting Girls From Violence a Global Priority – Hon. Emeka Obioma

Umuahia, Abia State — October 11, 2024
As the world observes the International Day of the Girl Child, Hon. Emeka Obioma, the Umuahia South Rep and  Abia State House of Assembly Chief Whip, has called for immediate and sustained efforts to protect girls from violence globally.

Speaking to newsmen on thursday, Obioma emphasized the urgency of addressing gender-based violence, which continues to threaten the safety and future of girls worldwide.

Protecting girls from violence is not just a national concern; it is a global priority,” Obioma noted, highlighting the rising incidents of domestic abuse, sexual exploitation, child marriage, and trafficking.
He stressed that governments, civil society, and international organizations must collaborate to ensure that girls everywhere can grow up in environments free from violence and discrimination.

This year’s International Day of the Girl Child, serves as a reminder of the significant role girls play in shaping the future.
The Lawmaker pointed out that despite the growing awareness, millions of girls continue to face barriers that hinder their access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

Empowering girls means giving them the tools they need to thrive, whether it’s through education or legal protection,” Obioma stated.
He urged policymakers to strengthen laws that protect girls and called on global leaders to prioritize funding for initiatives aimed at preventing gender-based violence.
We must invest in creating safe spaces for girls, ensuring they have access to justice, and providing them with opportunities for leadership,” he said.

Obioma’s remarks come at a critical time when global reports indicate that violence against girls has escalated in conflict zones and areas affected by economic instability.

To address these challenges, Obioma proposed a comprehensive framework that includes stricter enforcement of existing laws, community outreach programs to raise awareness about girls’ rights, and increased support for survivors of violence.
Ending violence against girls requires collective action, and we must hold ourselves accountable to this mission,”
Together, we can create a world where every girl can grow up free from violence and coercion, and fully enjoy her rights,” he concluded.

As the world marks this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, Obioma’s message echoes the call for a global commitment to ensuring that girls can live free from violence and take on leadership roles in building a more equitable future.

The International Day of the Girl Child is observed annually on October 11 and aims to highlight the challenges faced by girls around the world, while promoting their empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.
