Armed Forces Remembrance: Abia Lawmaker Advocates for Support to Families of Fallen Heroes

Umuahia, Abia State –

Hon. Barr. Anderson Akaliro, the lawmaker representing Umuahia North Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has called for greater support for the families of fallen heroes and veterans as part of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day activities.

He emphasized the need to recognize the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces in ensuring peace and unity in Nigeria.

Speaking to our newsmen yesterday, Hon. Akaliro lauded the courage and dedication of soldiers who paid the ultimate price in defense of the nation. He highlighted that their selfless service should not be forgotten, urging both government and private organizations to prioritize the welfare of their families and surviving veterans.

"Our fallen heroes laid down their lives for the peace and unity of our country. Their sacrifices should inspire us to show gratitude not just in words but in action, by ensuring their families are well-catered for," Akaliro said.

He proposed the establishment of more robust welfare schemes for the families of deceased soldiers and initiatives aimed at empowering veterans.
According to the lawmaker, such measures would not only honor the memory of the fallen but also encourage serving members of the armed forces to continue their work with renewed dedication.

Hon. Akaliro also called on citizens to reflect on the importance of national unity and to support efforts aimed at fostering peace in the country. He reiterated the need for policies that promote inclusivity and stability, noting that the sacrifices of the armed forces should not be in vain.

The Armed Forces Remembrance Day, marked annually on January 15, serves as a tribute to Nigerian soldiers who fought in various conflicts, including the World Wars, peacekeeping missions, and the Nigerian Civil War. It is also an opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by veterans and their families.

The event in Abia State included wreath-laying ceremonies, prayers, and discussions on how to better integrate ex-servicemen into society.

Akaliro pledged to champion related causes in the State House of Assembly, ensuring that the voices of veterans and their families are heard.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with security challenges, the call to support the families of fallen heroes and veterans serves as a reminder of the enduring need for unity and shared responsibility in nation-building.
