In a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Barr. Anderson Akaliro, the representative for Umuahia North, during the Assembly's plenary session on Tuesday, where he raised concerns over the Mbato Ofeme bridge’s devastation and urged that immediate repairs begin on the Bridge
Hon. Akaliro described the current state of the bridge as a major threat to the lives and livelihoods of residents in the Mbato Ofeme autonomous community.
He called on the government to take swift action, warning that further neglect could lead to dire consequences.
“This bridge is a crucial link for our people, connecting them to markets, schools, and medical facilities. Its current state has left many stranded, affecting transportation and economic activities in the community,” Akaliro stated while addressing his colleagues.
The motion received unanimous support from members of the Assembly, who acknowledged the urgent need for intervention.
Following deliberations, the House directed the state’s Ministry of Works to immediately assess the damage and commence repairs.
Speaking further, Hon. Akaliro emphasized the need for timely government intervention, noting that continuous delays could worsen the situation.
“We cannot afford to wait until lives are lost before action is taken. The government must act now to restore the bridge and alleviate the suffering of our people,” he urged.
Residents of Mbato Ofeme have long complained about the deteriorating condition of the bridge, with many calling for government intervention. With the Assembly’s latest resolution, expectations are high that relief will soon come to the affected community.
The Ministry of Works is now expected to mobilize to the site in compliance with the Assembly’s directive, marking a crucial step towards addressing the infrastructural challenges in Umuahia North.
