As the rainy season begins, the Igbo World Union (IWU) has called on farmers across Igboland and beyond to return to their farms and take advantage of the favorable weather for agricultural activities.
The President-General of the union, His Imperial Majesty, Amb. Sir Dr. Mishak Nnanta, KJW, Gburugburu Ndigbo Dum, made this passionate appeal while emphasizing the importance of agriculture in ensuring food security, economic stability, and sustainable development.
Nnanta encouraged Igbo farmers, both young and old, to embrace farming as a means of reducing dependence on imported food and strengthening local food production.
He noted that the Igbo people have a rich history of agrarian enterprise and should revive their ancestral farming practices with modern innovations to boost productivity.
Furthermore, the Igbo World Union extended its appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s support for farmers, especially in providing agricultural inputs, funding, and policies aimed at enhancing food security in Nigeria. Amb. Mishak Nnanta acknowledged the federal government’s efforts in promoting mechanized farming, fertilizer distribution, and access to credit for smallholder farmers.
He urged both state and local governments in the Southeast to complement the federal government's efforts by investing in rural infrastructure, providing farm incentives, and supporting cooperative farming.
The Igbo World Union reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with stakeholders in the agricultural sector to empower farmers, encourage youth participation in agribusiness, and promote sustainable farming practices. The union also emphasized the need for security in rural areas to protect farmers from threats and ensure a safe farming environment.
The IWU President concluded by urging communities to embrace communal farming initiatives and agricultural cooperatives to maximize resources and increase productivity.
He expressed optimism that if well embraced, this renewed focus on agriculture would significantly contribute to economic growth and food sufficiency in the region.
