Umuahia, Abia State – May 3, 2025

As the global community marked the 2025 edition of World Press Freedom Day, the Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Obioma, has reaffirmed his strong support for media independence while calling on journalists to embrace integrity, truth, and national responsibility in the discharge of their duties.

Speaking to newsmen in Umuahia on Friday, Hon. Obioma emphasized the vital role of the press in sustaining democracy, upholding accountability, and giving a voice to the voiceless.

He described press freedom as a cornerstone of a just and progressive society, adding that journalists must be free to operate without fear or censorship.

The freedom of the press is not a privilege granted by the government but a fundamental right enshrined in our democratic principles,” Hon. Obioma stated.

A free and independent media is essential for good governance, transparency, and the protection of human rights.”

However, the lawmaker was quick to stress the importance of responsible journalism, cautioning against the dangers of misinformation, fake news, and sensationalism, especially in the age of digital media.

He urged media practitioners to remain committed to truth and objectivity, even in the face of pressure or influence.

With freedom comes responsibility,” he noted.

Our media must rise above partisanship, resist the temptation to peddle falsehoods, and uphold the ethics that guide the noble profession of journalism. Only then can the media truly fulfill its role as the watchdog of society.”

Hon. Obioma also acknowledged the sacrifices made by journalists, especially those who have faced threats, attacks, or lost their lives in the line of duty. He called on governments at all levels to enact and enforce laws that protect journalists and ensure a safe working environment for media professionals.

On this World Press Freedom Day, we remember those who paid the ultimate price for truth,” he said.

Their courage must inspire us to build a society where journalists are not targets, but partners in development and democracy.”

The ABSHA Chief Whip concluded by reiterating his commitment to championing legislative frameworks that promote press freedom and media development in Abia State. He called on his colleagues in the Assembly, civil society, and the general public to support a vibrant, independent, and professional media landscape.

World Press Freedom Day is observed every May 3rd to raise awareness about the importance of a free press and to remind governments of their duty to uphold the right to freedom of expression as stated in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
