Abia State, May 3, 2025 -
As the global community marks World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2025, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, issued a powerful statement calling for enhanced legal protections for journalists and the strengthening of press freedom in Nigeria.
In a press release issued in Umuahia, Akaliro commended the vital role journalists play in upholding democracy, promoting accountability, and giving a voice to the voiceless. He stressed that without a free and independent press, no society can thrive or claim to be truly democratic.
"Journalists are the backbone of our democratic society," Akaliro said. "They risk their lives and reputations daily to bring truth to light. On this day, we must not only celebrate their courage but also reaffirm our commitment to defending their rights and freedoms."
He decried the increasing threats, harassment, and censorship faced by members of the press, especially those reporting on corruption, governance failures, and human rights abuses.
According to Akaliro, the current legal framework does not adequately safeguard journalists from intimidation, arbitrary arrests, or violence.
"The Nigerian press continues to operate under difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions. This is unacceptable in a democracy," Akaliro noted. "We need stronger laws that not only guarantee freedom of expression but also penalize any abuse of power aimed at silencing the media."
The lawmaker urged both federal and state governments to work collaboratively with media stakeholders, civil society, and the judiciary to ensure that Nigeria upholds its constitutional commitment to press freedom.
He also emphasized the need for legal reforms that provide journalists with swift recourse to justice when their rights are violated.
"World Press Freedom Day is not just a ceremonial event. It is a solemn reminder that freedom of the press must be protected with action, not just words," he said.
"I will continue to use my position in the Abia State House of Assembly to advocate for the rights of journalists and push for laws that shield them from oppression."
Akaliro also called on journalists to uphold the ethics of their profession by remaining factual, balanced, and objective in their reportage.
He emphasized that responsible journalism is key to maintaining the trust and confidence of the public.
"The responsibility of the press is immense, and so is its power. We expect journalists to wield that power with integrity, fairness, and a sense of national duty," he added.
In closing, Hon. Akaliro reaffirmed his unwavering support for a free press as an essential pillar of justice, transparency, and good governance. He called on citizens to stand in solidarity with journalists and demand a media environment that is safe, open, and independent.
