Hon. Onyekwere Akym Uche (OAU), has applauded Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, for his ongoing efforts to illuminate major streets across the state, describing the initiative as a catalyst for economic revitalisation, improved security, and vibrant nightlife.
Speaking to journalists, OAU said the governor’s investment in street lighting is already changing the face of urban life in Abia, encouraging residents to feel safer after dark and opening opportunities for small businesses to thrive.
“Gov. Alex Otti’s streetlight project is not just about beautification. It is a strategic investment in security and the economy. Well-lit streets deter criminal activities and give traders, transporters, and hospitality businesses the confidence to operate late into the night,” he said.
OAU urged other leaders to take a cue from Otti’s vision, emphasising that nightlife development could serve as a powerful tool for job creation and crime reduction across Nigeria.
“If our leaders can invest in nightlife infrastructure, from lighting to security patrols and entertainment hubs, we will see a significant boost in employment opportunities. Night markets, entertainment centres, restaurants, and transport services can all flourish, creating a chain reaction of economic activity,” he stated.
He noted that a thriving nightlife economy would not only keep youths productively engaged but also generate more revenue for state governments through taxes and levies.
“Nightlife is an untapped goldmine in Nigeria. In cities like Lagos and Abuja, it has already proven its worth. Abia is now on the path to joining that league, thanks to Gov. Otti’s foresight. Other states must follow suit if we are serious about tackling unemployment and insecurity,” OAU added.
OAU, a former governorship candidate, also called for complementary measures such as improved public transportation at night, better policing of entertainment districts, and the promotion of cultural and music events to draw visitors from within and outside the state.
“Lighting up our streets is the first step, but we must also build the systems that make nightlife safe, accessible, and enjoyable. When nightlife thrives, communities prosper,” he concluded.
Gov. Otti’s streetlight initiative has so far covered major roads in Umuahia and Aba, with plans underway to extend the project to other parts of the state, signaling a broader push towards urban renewal and economic stimulation.
