As Nigeria marks her 65th Independence anniversary, the member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to building a better nation.
In a statement commemorating the occasion, Hon. Akaliro described Nigeria as a country blessed with immense human and natural resources but challenged by years of mismanagement, insecurity, and poor leadership. He emphasized that despite these obstacles, there is still hope for a greater Nigeria if citizens and leaders alike embrace collective responsibility.
“Today, as we celebrate 65 years of independence, we must remind ourselves that our journey as a nation has not been without challenges. Yet, I strongly believe there is still hope for a greater Nigeria,” Akaliro stated.
The lawmaker noted that true independence goes beyond political freedom, stressing that it should translate into economic growth, justice, and social equity for all Nigerians. He called on leaders at all levels to prioritize good governance and transparency, while citizens must also play their part in nation-building.
“We cannot always blame leadership without reflecting on our roles as citizens. Nation-building is a shared duty. If we all uphold integrity, diligence, and accountability in our daily lives, Nigeria will rise above her present difficulties,” he added.
Hon. Akaliro also lauded the resilience of Nigerians who, despite economic hardship and insecurity, continue to contribute positively in different spheres of life. He urged the youth, in particular, to channel their creativity and energy toward innovations that would drive national growth rather than indulging in vices that could derail the future.
“Our young people are the future of this country. I encourage them to take pride in their identity as Nigerians, to dream big, and to build solutions that will uplift our communities and society at large,” he said.
While acknowledging the efforts of the Abia State Government under Gov Alex Otti in driving reforms and infrastructural development, Akaliro expressed optimism that with sincerity of purpose and unity, Nigeria will overcome her present struggles and emerge stronger.
“This Independence anniversary should renew our sense of patriotism. We must set aside ethnic, religious, and political differences and unite for the common good. Together, we can build the Nigeria of our dreams,” the lawmaker concluded.
