The member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has emphasized the vast potentials of the tourism sector as a catalyst for economic development and job creation in Abia State. He made this known in his message to mark this year’s World Tourism Day, celebrated globally on September 27.

Speaking, Akaliro stated that tourism remains one of the most underutilized sectors in the state, despite its ability to boost revenue, create employment opportunities, and foster cultural integration.
He stressed that Abia has rich cultural heritage sites, natural landscapes, and historic monuments that, if properly harnessed, could place the state on the global tourism map.

Tourism is not just about leisure, it is an economic driver with the potential to create thousands of jobs for our people,” Akaliro said.
Abia is blessed with natural endowments and cultural treasures, but we must be deliberate in developing the necessary infrastructure, security, and policies that will make our state attractive to both local and international tourists.”

The lawmaker further explained that investment in tourism could complement the state government’s economic diversification agenda, particularly in areas such as agriculture, hospitality, and small-scale enterprises.
According to him, the multiplier effect of tourism would directly impact rural communities, artisans, and small business owners.

When tourists come into our state, they patronize hotels, restaurants, craft makers, transporters, and local markets. This chain of activities translates into income for our people, and more importantly, jobs for the unemployed,” he added.

Hon. Akaliro also used the occasion to commend the administration of Gov. Alex Otti for its visible efforts in promoting economic growth and infrastructural renewal across the state.
He noted that the government’s ongoing road construction projects, urban renewal initiatives, and plans to revive key cultural and tourist sites will help lay a solid foundation for tourism-driven development.

“I must sincerely applaud the efforts of Governor Alex Otti and his administration in opening up Abia through quality road networks, improved infrastructure, and clear plans to revive our tourist sites,” Akaliro remarked.
This leadership direction is key to making tourism thrive and ensuring Abia is positioned as a destination of choice.”

He also called for a strategic partnership between the government, private investors, and local communities in reviving historic sites such as the Long Juju of Arochukwu, the Azumini Blue River, Ojukwu bunker and the war museum, among others. He maintained that restoring and promoting these sites could attract scholars, researchers, and explorers from around the world.

We cannot continue to allow our heritage sites to rot away,” Akaliro stressed. “With proper promotion and preservation, Abia can become a major tourism hub in Nigeria. This requires collaboration between government agencies, investors, and our people who are the custodians of these traditions.”

The Umuahia North lawmaker also pledged to use his legislative platform to advocate policies that will encourage investment in the tourism sector while ensuring that communities benefit directly from such initiatives. He called on young people in particular to see tourism as a viable career path and an opportunity for entrepreneurship.

In conclusion, Akaliro reaffirmed his commitment to supporting government initiatives aimed at opening up the state’s tourism industry. He urged stakeholders to recognize tourism not just as a cultural or recreational pursuit, but as a serious economic venture capable of driving development and prosperity for the people.
