The Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has emphasized the strategic importance of tourism as a major driver of economic revival and sustainable development in Abia State and Nigeria at large.

Speaking in commemoration of World Tourism Day 2025, Aguocha urged both government and private sector stakeholders to invest in the growth of the tourism industry, describing it as a sector with untapped potential to create jobs, promote culture, and attract global partnerships.

Tourism is a pathway to economic revival,” Aguocha declared. “Across the world, nations are harnessing tourism not only as a means of showcasing their heritage and culture but also as a solid avenue for wealth creation and foreign exchange earnings. Abia State is richly endowed with cultural festivals, historical monuments, and natural attractions that can be developed into world-class destinations.”

The lawmaker pointed out that investing in tourism infrastructure and promotional strategies would not only diversify the state’s economy but also reduce over-dependence on oil and government allocations.

Abia has the potential to be a hub of cultural tourism in Nigeria,” he said. “From the ancient heritage of Arochukwu’s Long Juju Cave to the vibrant artistry of our local craftsmen, we have treasures that the world needs to see. With the right investment and policy framework, these attractions can generate revenue, provide employment for our youth, and uplift local communities.”

Hon. Aguocha further stressed that tourism development should go hand in hand with improved security, better road networks, and the empowerment of rural communities who are custodians of local traditions and natural resources.

We must create an enabling environment for tourism to thrive,” Aguocha noted. “This means prioritizing security, good roads, electricity, and hospitality services. It also means empowering local communities so that they become active participants and beneficiaries of the tourism value chain.

Hon. Aguocha however, commended the administration of Gov. Alex Otti for its ongoing economic and infrastructural reforms, which he said are laying the foundation for sustainable growth in Abia.

Dr Alex Otti’s commitment to building durable roads, opening up rural communities, and plans to revive key tourist sites across the state is highly commendable. His government’s focus on infrastructure and economic diversification is in line with what we need to unlock the tourism potential of our state,” Aguocha remarked.

He concluded with a call for collective responsibility, urging Abians to take pride in their culture and environment, while encouraging policymakers to commit to long-term investments in the sector.

Tourism is not just about attracting visitors,” he said. “It is about telling our story, preserving our heritage, and building an economy that works for everyone. If we take bold steps today, tourism can become a cornerstone of Abia’s economic transformation.”
