The Chief Whip of the Abia State House of Assembly and Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Tommy Obioma, has assured that the state legislature will provide strong legislative support to drive the growth of tourism in Abia State.
He made this pledge in commemoration of the 2025 World Tourism Day celebrated globally on September 27.
Obioma, in a statement released to mark the occasion, emphasized that tourism remains a powerful tool for economic growth, cultural preservation, and community development.
He noted that Abia State, blessed with historical sites, cultural festivals, and natural attractions, has the potential to become a leading destination in Nigeria if given the right attention.
"Tourism is not just about leisure and entertainment. It is about creating jobs, empowering communities, preserving our heritage, and boosting local economies," Obioma said.
"As lawmakers, we are committed to enacting policies and motions that will encourage both government and private sector investment in this critical sector."
The lawmaker highlighted iconic tourist sites in Abia such as the Long Juju of Arochukwu, the Azumini Blue River, and various cultural festivals across the state, stressing that with proper infrastructure, security, and marketing, they could attract both local and international visitors.
"Abia has what it takes to compete with the best tourist destinations in the country and beyond," he continued.
"We will work with the executive arm and other stakeholders to ensure that tourism is given a front row seat in our development agenda."
Obioma further called on communities to take pride in their cultural assets and to partner with government initiatives aimed at developing the tourism value chain. According to him, community participation is central to sustainable tourism.
"Tourism development is a collective effort. While government provides enabling laws and infrastructure, communities must safeguard and promote their heritage sites," he noted.
"Our vision is to see tourism become a major revenue earner for Abia, creating jobs for youths and opportunities for small businesses."
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment, alongside his colleagues in the House, to continue pushing for legislative frameworks that would strengthen Abia’s tourism sector and position the state as a hub of cultural pride and economic prosperity.
