Umuahia, Abia State |October 14, 2025 —
In a proactive and community-driven effort to address the growing environmental crisis in Umuahia North, the Member representing the constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Barr. Anderson Kelechi Akaliro, has embarked on a comprehensive erosion survey alongside the Chairman of the Nigeria Climate Change Response Program (NCCRP).
The on-site inspection, which was also covered by the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia (BCA), marks a significant step toward developing practical and sustainable solutions to the escalating erosion menace affecting local communities.
The assessment tour covered several erosion-prone areas, including Umuda Isingwu, Umuawa, Ofeme, Nkwoegwu, and Ekeoba, where deep gullies and deteriorating roads have continued to endanger lives, disrupt businesses, and threaten farmlands. Residents and traders expressed their frustration and fear over the worsening situation, noting that each rainy season worsens the erosion, destroying homes and cutting off access routes.
Speaking during the inspection, Hon. Anderson Akaliro expressed deep concern over the devastating impact of erosion on both the environment and the socio-economic wellbeing of the affected communities.
He emphasized the urgency of a coordinated intervention between government agencies and environmental experts.
“What we have seen here today is not just erosion; it is a threat to lives, properties, and the future of our people,” Akaliro lamented.
“The scale of destruction demands urgent government attention and immediate remedial action. We cannot continue to watch our communities deteriorate under the weight of neglect and natural degradation.”
The lawmaker commended the NCCRP for partnering with him in the joint environmental assessment, describing the collaboration as a “timely and strategic move” toward mitigating climate-related challenges in Abia State.
He added that the findings from the survey would be formally presented to the Abia State Government for inclusion in its priority environmental response programs.
“I want to assure the good people of Umuahia North that this inspection is not a mere visit; it is the beginning of a process that will lead to real solutions,” Akaliro stated.
“We are working closely with NCCRP and other relevant agencies to ensure that our recommendations translate into tangible projects that will protect our environment and safeguard our communities.”
On his part, the Chairman of NCCRP commended Hon. Akaliro for his hands-on approach to governance and his proactive concern for the environment.
He described erosion as one of the most pressing ecological threats in southeastern Nigeria and pledged NCCRP’s full support in designing and implementing sustainable erosion control mechanisms across Umuahia North.
Hon. Akaliro reiterated his unwavering commitment to sustainable community development, stressing that environmental preservation is a collective responsibility.
He called on residents to cooperate with experts and adopt environmentally friendly practices that can help curb further degradation.
“Safeguarding our environment is not only a government duty; it is a shared responsibility,” Akaliro concluded.
“If we all play our part, we can restore our lands, rebuild our roads, and ensure a healthier and safer future for the people of Umuahia North.”
The inspection tour shows a renewed sense of urgency and collaboration in addressing environmental challenges across Abia State, with stakeholders expressing optimism that proactive leadership such as Akaliro’s will drive meaningful change and sustainable recovery for erosion-threatened communities.
