In an ongoing effort to secure a political resolution to his prolonged detention, the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has officially appointed Hon. Obi Aguocha, the Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, as his official negotiator with the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The appointment, which was conveyed through a formal letter signed by Mazi Kanu’s Lead Counsel, Barr. Aloy Ejimakor, grants Hon. Aguocha full authority and discretion to engage the Federal Government on all matters concerning the possible resolution of the IPOB leader’s case and his continued detention.
According to Barr. Ejimakor, the decision reflects Mazi Kanu’s confidence in Hon. Aguocha’s patriotism, courage, and deep understanding of the delicate issues surrounding the agitation and its implications for peace, justice, and national unity.
The letter further emphasized that Hon. Aguocha is to interface closely with Kanu’s legal team and other relevant stakeholders in pursuit of a political and lawful solution.
“This is a significant step toward achieving a peaceful and lawful resolution to the lingering matter. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu believes that Hon. Aguocha embodies the integrity, balance, and wisdom required to engage the Federal Government constructively,” Barr. Ejimakor stated.
Hon. Obi Aguocha, who has consistently called for a political solution to Kanu’s case since his election to the National Assembly, described the appointment as “a sacred trust.”
Speaking to our newsmen in Umuahia, the lawmaker reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to pursuing dialogue, justice, and lasting peace.
“I consider this a call to serve not just Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, but the cause of peace, unity, and equity in our nation. My goal is to help bridge the gap between the Federal Government and our people through dialogue and mutual respect,” Hon. Aguocha stated.
He further noted that the time had come for Nigeria to adopt reconciliation and inclusive dialogue as tools for national healing.
“We must rise above politics and pride. The case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not merely a legal matter; it is a national question that requires wisdom, empathy, and courage. I will continue to engage all relevant parties with openness and sincerity,” he added.
Political observers have described the development as a “game-changing move” that could open new avenues for peaceful engagement between the Federal Government and the South East. Many view Hon. Aguocha’s appointment as a reflection of the growing recognition of his voice as one of moderation, integrity, and commitment to justice within the National Assembly.
As expectations rise, stakeholders across the South East and beyond are hopeful that this new approach could pave the way for reconciliation, peace, and the long-awaited release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, thereby restoring trust and calm across the region.
