The House of Representatives is considering a bill to establish the Drivers’ Welfare and Social Security Board, to promote the welfare of drivers in Nigeria through the provision of social security, healthcare, pension scheme, and workplace protection.

The bill, read for the first time on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, was sponsored by the member representing Oshodi/Isolo II Federal Constituency of Lagos State, Mr Jesse Onuakalusi.

The bill aims to address the challenges faced by drivers, particularly those in the informal sector, such as inadequate healthcare, financial insecurity, and unsafe working conditions.

The proposed legislation also seeks to create a fund for the implementation of a welfare scheme for drivers in both the public and private sectors.

There is currently no database of professional drivers operating in the country, even as incentives such as health coverage are not covered in extant laws for those working in the private sector.

The board will also “register and maintain a database of eligible drivers across the country, develop and implement welfare schemes including healthcare, pensions, insurance and training,” among others.
